Merecedes Benz CLS Class Review & First Drive

The second act in a niche-generating performance from Mercedes-Benz. It’s arguably not as dramatic as a result, but the Mercedes CLS is no less desirable – despite the fact it introduced the ridiculous ‘four-door coupe’ term into road-testing parlance. Swoopy and lithe, it’s a handsome four-door, and despite the curves it’s not overly compromised inside. Makes you wonder why you’d have a (now admittedly quite swoopy) E-Class, until you realise the CLS is a sizeable chunk of money more than its more conventional saloon sibling. Get On Road Price of Merecedes Benz cars in Carzprice

This series gets a refreshing new look, as there are several changes made to its exteriors, especially to its front facade. This vehicle gets a completely refurbished radiator grille with diamond pin design that is inspired from their A-Class hatch. It is further fitted with a single horizontally positioned slat and is embedded with the company’s insignia in the center. The bonnet on top has a slanting forward design with expressive character lines on it. The headlight cluster gets a minor tweak and is equipped with MULTIBEAM LED lamps. It consists of 36 LEDs out of which, 24 LEDs are individually controlled at 100 times per seconds to give optimum visibility. Below this, its bumper gets a sporty new look with pronounced air intake sections. In addition to this, it is also fitted with a sharp, non-body colored chin guard that adds to the sporty appeal of its frontage. Coming to the side facet, this luxury coupe has not received many updates, since the entire design remains untouched. Like any other model, this coupe too gets body colored door handles and ORVM caps. The wing mirrors are also integrated with turn blinkers, which dazzles this facet, while enhancing the safety quotient. Its beautifully carved fenders are skilfully fitted with multi-spoke design alloy wheels, which gives a distinctive look to this facet. Like the front facet, its rear too received an updated taillight cluster with improved lighting pattern. It houses LED brake lights along with turn indicators that gives a dynamic look to this facet. Check On Road Price of Merecedes Benz CLS Class in Carzprice The rear bumper too gets a modified structure featuring black colored lower cladding. Furthermore, it also houses a pair of chrome plated exhaust pipes that renders a sporty appeal to this facet. The design of tailgate remains to be the same and is decorated with a chrome plated strip. The overall look of this facet is complimented by the stylish company’s insignia, which is embedded on to the tailgate.

The CLS-Class’ evocative roofline is one of its most distinguishing characteristics, but it’s not without its drawbacks. Headroom for the rear seats suffers as a result, making the backseats ill-suited for adult passengers. The CLS also has just two seats in back with a center console situated in the middle. For frequent passenger shuttling, the less expensive five-seat E-Class is a better choice. Materials quality and construction are up to the utmost expectations for Mercedes-Benz, but the interior’s look and controls are from the previous generation of the brand’s design. It lacks the organic curves, oversized display screen and general sense of opulence you’ll find in the 2017 E-Class — then again, you may prefer the CLS’ blockier, more classically German aesthetic.

Either way, another key difference is the standard COMAND electronics interface. It features the same software as you’ll find in the updated C-Class (though not the E- and S-Class, which are even more advanced), but it’s stuck with an 8-inch screen and it lacks the new touchpad included with the newer systems. The remaining buttons and knob get the job done, but this latest system does seem to be a bit more confusing than its predecessor.Stepping up to the AMG CLS 63 S adds a distinctive sporty flair to the cabin, with racy sport seats and unique stitching and trim selections. The AMG also relocates the gear selector from the steering column to the center console, eliminating the large cupholders and reducing some interior storage for your personal effects.Cargo space is generous regardless of CLS model, with a trunk that can hold up to 15.3 cubic feet. It is worth noting that the optional Bang & Olufsen audio system significantly compromises trunk space.

In the International market the 2015 CLS gets 5 engine options, which fulfills all the criteria of Euro 6 emission standard. The new diesel engine which has been added to the CLS lineup is called 220 BlueTEC, it features fourth-generation common rail direct injection, two-stage turbocharging and BlueTEC technology, this engine is capable of producing 170 hp of peak power and 400 Nm of Torque. Then there is the usual four-cylinder diesel unit in the CLS 250 BlueTEC which produces 204 hp and 500 Nm of torque. While the V6 diesel unit produces 258 hp of peak power and 620 Nm of torque figures.

Coming to the petrol engines we have the CLS 400 which comes with a V6 Turbocharged engine, this engine will replace the existing CLS 350 BlueEFFICENCY, the CLS 400 now produces 333 hp of power and 480 Nm of peak torque which is definitely more than its predecessor. While the most powerful of the lot is the CLS 500 which is powered by a V8 produces 408 hp of peak power and 600 Nm of torque. All the engines are mated to the newly developed 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission with hydrodynamic torque converter in the premium segment. This automatic transmission not only enhances the overall driving experience but also helps in reducing the overall fuel consumption.

For the Indian market Mercedes Benz decided to launch the CLS only with a single diesel engine option, the CLS 250 CDI which is the only variant available in the Indian market. Under its hood you will find a 2.1 Litre 4 cylinder inline 4 engine which is capable of producing about 204 Hp of peak power at 3800 rpm and 500 Nm of torque in between 1600-1800 rpm. This is definitely not a super athlete and takes its lousy time of 7.5 seconds to reach the 100km/h mark from standstill.

The CLS-Class comes with the AIRMATIC air suspension, which provides an excellent synergy of ride and handling. The driver has the option to choose Comfort or Sport setting for the suspension. In Comfort you don’t feel the road as the undulations and bad roads are dissolved immediately by the air suspension. The handling gets a bit soft while cornering hard due to the comfort oriented setup though. In Sport, the CLS provides excellent road holding confidence and handling is quite sharp without any body roll being felt. The ride quality still feels plush, though sharp potholes tend to judder the car around. The steering feedback is progressive with increasing speed and is surprisingly direct, which is a joy around bends. Braking performance is strong with the ADAPTIVE BRAKE system shedding speed quickly. Book test drive for Merecedes Benz CLS Class in Carzprice

A lot of safety features offered by the automaker. These include sophisticated attention Assist system and a pre-safe system which recognizes driving situation and activates protective functions accordingly. In addition, it has neck-pro head restraint system which gets activated while there is any impact from the rear. This vehicle includes various other protective features including seat belts with pre-pensioners, airbags, two-stage belt force limiter, adaptive brake lighting flashing function and cruise control system with speed limiter function. Not only these, it features tyre pressure monitoring system, break pad wear indicator, side impact protection beams, traction control system and electronic stability program

The Mercedes Benz CLS Class definitely looks stylish and aggressive than its predecessor, plus the introduction of modern MULTIBEAM LED headlamps makes it a more improved car technologically than its rivals. Beside all this the revamped interior with the big touchscreen 8 inch central display adds the more premium quotient to its interiors.

However the reduced engine capacity will certainly hamper the spirit of those who preferred the CLS for its powerful engine option nonetheless for those who are looking out for a stylish 4 door coupe with an advanced technological improvement can certainly get their hands on this car.
